People Make Mistakes
Welcome to another episode of Safer VRS podcast and in today's episode, we will be talking about the principles of human performance in the vacation rental industry.
One of the first principles that we will be discussing is the fact that people make mistakes. It is essential to acknowledge this fact and embed safety into business operations rather than setting it aside. We need to integrate safety and loss prevention into property management and vacation rental businesses.
I will be introducing you to the concept of "safety differently" or "new safety." It is all about people and how they are integral to the success of businesses. Human beings are not infallible, and they make mistakes. It is crucial to learn from them, and that's why I always emphasize my philosophy of being a hundred percent responsible for everything that happens in my business.
We cannot prevent all incidents from happening, but we can put controls in place to recover from incidents and move to a safer state. For example, fire extinguishers, smoke alarms, clear routes of egress, and emergency service contacts can be employed in the property management industry to prevent damage and injuries in case of a fire.
It's important to understand why people make mistakes and what controls can be implemented to protect them in such situations. Mistakes are normal and happen all the time, and it's crucial to learn from them and implement controls to prevent such incidents. We should focus on the system and process that allowed the failure to occur rather than focusing on what could have happened.
In conclusion, safety should not be an afterthought but an integral part of business operations. By acknowledging that people make mistakes and implementing controls to recover from incidents, we can move towards a safer vacation rental industry.
