Why Self-Verifications are More Effective Than Inspections
In this week's episode, we're going to dive into the topic of self-verifications and why they're more effective than inspections. To give you a little background, an inspection is where I, as an inspector, go out and take a look at various things such as smoke detectors, pool safety, electrical systems, and more to ensure the safety of the property. Self-verifications, on the other hand, go a step further. They are a way to identify specific areas or topics that could potentially lead to serious incidents in your vacation rental property or business.
For example, let me give you a situation from my days at BP where I learned the importance of self-verifications. You may remember the Macondo incident in the Gulf of Mexico where an oil explosion occurred, leading to several deaths and significant losses for the company. When I went back and read some of the reports, I learned that executives had visited the drilling rig a few days before the incident. They conducted inspections and everything seemed to be in order. However, a few days later, a well control issue occurred and it turned out that one or more of the critical protection systems was not functioning properly.
This situation highlights the importance of self-verifications. By conducting a self-verification, you can dig deeper into the root causes of incidents and take proactive measures to prevent them from happening again in the future.
I hope you're as excited as I am to dive into this topic and learn more about why self-verifications are more effective than inspections.
